PhD Studentships – Non Commercial areas of Law

The Department of Law is able to offer 4 fully-funded PhD postgraduate research studentships to research students for 2008/09 entry. The studentships cover tuition fees (home or overseas fees) and a maintenance grant of £14,000 per year. Subject to satisfactory annual progress reports, the award can be held for three years, though the holder will be expected to apply for other sources of funding where applicable. The studentships are awarded on the basis of academic excellence and financial need. Applications will be considered in any field of Law in which the Department is able to provide appropriate supervision.

Deadline
The closing date for applications for the Studentships is May 1st. Decisions will be made and offers sent out on May 29th 2008. (application form)

PhD applications can take considerable time to process. It is, therefore, strongly advisable to submit an application for admission as early as possible in order to receive an admission decision before the studentship deadline.

Applicants should apply for admission to the College as a research student in the normal way by sending an email to lawsresearch@qmul.ac.uk, g.skehan@qmul.ac.uk or j.claydon@qmul.ac.uk for an application form and prospectus or by downloading the application form.

Before applying, it is important to check that there is a member of staff available with the appropriate expertise to supervise the research. Details of staff research interests can be found on the Academic Staff pages.

Academics are generally happy to look at a proposal sent by email before a formal application is made, in order to ascertain whether they are in a position to supervise if an offer is made.
It is important that applicants indicate that they wish to be considered for a Queen Mary Studentship (on page 3 of their application form).

PhD Studentships – Commercial areas of Law

CCLS will normally make several annual Studentship Awards for payment of fees and maintenance for students registering for full time PhD study in a commercial area of law. These awards are highly competitive and cover fees for the three year minimum period of study for the degree of PhD, as well as paying an amount towards living expenses.

Only full time students with an agreed offer of study are eligible to apply and should indicate their interest on the study application form.

The Duncan Norman Research Scholarship 2008/9

The Duncan Norman Research Scholarship at the University of Liverpool was established in 2004 following the receipt of a generous donation from The Duncan Norman Charitable Trust in memory of the late Mr Duncan Norman.

The objective of the Scholarship is to enable academically gifted students who also have the personal qualities to make them leaders in society, to pursue MPhil/PhD study at the University of Liverpool. The Scholarship may be used to fund research in any University department.

The University has established an Advisory Panel of internationally renowned persons to oversee the award of the Scholarship.

Eligibility
The Scholarship is available to all prospective full-time postgraduate research students, irrespective of nationality or tuition fee status (i.e. whether UK, EU or overseas).

To be eligible for consideration, prospective students must have had their application for MPhil/PhD research approved by the University by the application deadline.

One Scholarship shall be awarded annually, and competition therefore is very strong. Only students who already hold, or are likely to attain in forthcoming examinations, a first-class honours degree (or its equivalent) are likely to be considered by the Advisory Panel.

The Scholarship is available to new students only. Students currently registered for MPhil/PhD research at the University are ineligible to apply.

The Scholarship covers full tuition fees and provides a maintenance stipend and other benefits, including accommodation on the University campus and a University standard laptop or desktop computer to a total value of £20,000 per year. The Scholarship is awarded for one year in the first instance, but subject to satisfactory academic programme, will be renewed for a total period of up to three years.

For students from the UK and other European countries, it is expected that, where possible, applicants for the Duncan Norman Research Scholarship should also have made an application to the appropriate Research Council for a Postgraduate Studentship. If offered, the Studentship must be accepted, and in such circumstances the Duncan Norman Research Scholarship would provide additional funding such that the student would receive a stipend and other benefits to a total value of £20,000 annually.

For overseas students, it is expected that applicants for the Duncan Norman Research Scholarship should also have made an application via the University for an Overseas Research Students Award Scheme (ORSAS) award. Any applicant who has made a valid application to the University for an ORSAS award will be invited to apply for the Duncan Norman Research Scholarship.

The holder of the Scholarship must register for an MPhil/PhD at the University of Liverpool, and to attend any events based in Liverpool that are organised by the Duncan Norman Charitable Trust.

Apply
To apply for an award complete the application form which is available to download below:

The Birmingham Grant

The Birmingham Grant offers additional support to all students whose household income is assessed as £33,790 or less. From September 2007, you will receive a grant of £820 from the University if you:

Are a new, full-time undergraduate

Are eligible to pay fees at the rate of £3,070

Are living in the UK

Have applied to your Local Authority for a maintenance grant

Have a household income below £33,790

Have successfully achieved a place at the University

You do not need to apply for the Birmingham Grant. If you qualify, the University will notify you of your award in writing.

The Birmingham Scholarship

The Birmingham Scholarship recognises the achievement of students from low-income backgrounds who perform extremely well in their A levels (or equivalent qualifications). From September 2007, you will receive a Birmingham Scholarship if you:

Meet the above criteria for the award of a Birmingham Grant

Achieve a minimum of AAB at A level, more than 34 points in the IB, or DDD in BTEC. Other examinations may be considered. Please note that the award of a scholarship is not based on UCAS tariff points.

Students who meet the criteria and who successfully achieve a place at the University will be awarded a Birmingham Scholarship of £1,230. This means that qualifying students will receive a total of £2,050 for the 2007/08 academic year.

Essential information for Birmingham Grant and Scholarship recipients

Payment of the Birmingham Grant and Scholarship will be made in two equal instalments, one in late January and one in early May. Payment will be made directly into your bank account.

Once you have qualified for the Grant and/or Scholarship you will continue to receive the awards on an annual basis so long as you make normal progression, regardless of any change in your assessed income.

If you failed to meet the income criteria in 2006/07, but your 2007/08 financial assessment finds that your income has fallen below the financial threshold for these awards, you will then receive the Grant and/or Scholarship for that and subsequent years.

When completing your application for statutory support from your Local Authority, please ensure that you have fully completed section 13, as both you and your sponsors will need to provide consent to share the financial information that is used in your assessment. Please also ensure that the details you submit to both the Student Loans Company and the University (name, course details etc) are consistent. If you do not ensure that both of these items are complete, it may result in serious delays to the payment of your Birmingham Grant and/or Scholarship.

For 2007/08 students will need to have made an application for statutory support to their Local Authority (via PN1 form) and have received their support notification by 30 May 2008 in order to be awarded a Birmingham Grant and Scholarship. Regrettably, if the University does not receive your financial details by this date no award can be made.
